The laptop market in 2026 is more competitive than ever, with Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and Apple all offering compelling options across every price range. To find the best laptops you can buy, we analyzed recommendations from Wirecutter, Tom’s Hardware, PCMag, and WIRED, all of whom test hundreds of models annually. Here is what their testing reveals.
The Best Overall Laptop: MacBook Air (M5)
Tom’s Hardware names the MacBook Air (M5) as the best laptop and best Mac overall for 2026. Apple’s latest M5 chip delivers exceptional performance per watt, meaning you get desktop-class speed with silent, fanless design and extraordinary battery life. For most users, from students to professionals, the MacBook Air M5 is the default recommendation.
The 13-inch model with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage is the configuration most experts recommend, balancing performance, portability, and value.
The Best Windows Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1
Wirecutter’s top Windows laptop pick is the Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 (14-inch Intel, 2026), priced at approximately $1,030 at Best Buy. It features fast performance, terrific battery life (16.5 hours in testing), a vivid OLED touchscreen, and a 360-degree hinge for tablet and tent modes.
The tested configuration includes an Intel Core Ultra 5 322 processor, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB SSD, and weighs 3.04 pounds. The main trade-off is that it is a bit heavier than some ultrabooks, but the versatility of the 2-in-1 form factor makes it an excellent choice for students and professionals who want one device for everything.
The Best Budget Windows Laptop: Acer Aspire 16 and Aspire Go 16
Wirecutter also updated their budget recommendations in August 2026, naming the Acer Aspire 16 and Acer Aspire Go 16 as the best cheap Windows laptops. For shoppers under $500, these models offer the best balance of performance, build quality, and battery life.
The Best Battery Life: HP OmniBook 5 14
PCMag names the HP OmniBook 5 14 as the best Windows laptop for most people, highlighting its field-leading 34-hour battery life, vivid OLED display, ultra-thin and light design, and aggressive pricing at $859.99. The trade-off is a plastic keyboard deck that could use stiffening and modest graphics performance, but for productivity work, it is an outstanding value.
The Best Ultraportable: Dell XPS 14 (2026)
PCMag gives the Dell XPS 14 (2026) their Editors’ Choice award for ultraportable laptops, praising its sublime build quality, crisp OLED screen, class-leading battery life, and standout 4K webcam. It is priced at $2,749.99, putting it firmly in the premium category, but for users who want a high-end Windows ultrabook, it is a top contender.
