Construction workers are cashing in on the AI boom

The AI Boom: A Lucrative Opportunity for Construction Workers

The rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry has created a surge in demand for skilled construction workers to build massive data centers. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, workers who transition into data-center construction are experiencing significant pay increases, with some seeing jumps of 25% to 30% compared to their previous jobs. In some cases, the pay increases are even more substantial.

One such example is DeMond Chambliss, a 51-year-old who traded his small drywall business in Columbus, Ohio, for a supervisor role overseeing 200 workers at a data center site. He now earns over $100,000 annually, a significant increase from his previous income. “I pinch myself going to work every day,” Chambliss tells the Journal. Similarly, electrical safety specialist Marc Benner in Oregon earns $225,000 a year, while electrician Andrew Mason makes over $200,000 managing workers at six Northern Virginia data centers.

    Attractive Perks and Benefits

The Journal reports that companies are not only offering higher base pay but also providing attractive perks and benefits to lure skilled workers. These include heated break tents, free lunches, daily incentive bonuses, and even remote project management positions. For instance, one construction site offers workers $100 in daily incentive pay, which can add up to a significant amount over time. These benefits are a testament to the industry’s efforts to attract and retain top talent.

The surge in demand for skilled construction workers is largely driven by tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, which are racing to build hundreds of new data centers. However, this demand is colliding with an industry-wide shortage of roughly 439,000 skilled workers, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors trade group. As a result, companies are willing to offer competitive pay and benefits to attract the best workers.

A Growing Industry with Endless Opportunities

The AI boom has created a lucrative opportunity for construction workers, with many experiencing significant pay increases and attractive benefits. As the industry continues to grow, it is likely that we will see even more opportunities for skilled workers. With the demand for data centers showing no signs of slowing down, construction workers with the right skills and expertise can expect to be in high demand. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, the AI industry offers a promising career path with endless opportunities for growth and development.
