HBO Max and Paramount+ are going to become one service. That is the confirmed part. Skydance, the name of the combined company after Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery closed, says both streamers will “unify into a single service over time.”
What is actually confirmed
- The combination is real and complete. Paramount’s roughly $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has closed, bringing HBO Max and Paramount+ under one corporate roof.
- The intention is a single service. The phrase used in the announcement is that the two will unify “over time.”
- HBO’s Casey Bloys will oversee the merged streamers, according to reporting on the announcement.
- There is an interim phase. Skydance CEO David Ellison has described a “short-term” bundling phase before full combination.
What is not decided yet
Three important things remain open: the timing, the name, and the price. There is no published date for the switchover and no announced brand for the merged service. Anyone telling you the new name or the new monthly price is guessing.
That gap is normal for a merger of this size. Combining two large subscription platforms means migrating accounts, payment relationships, app listings and rights agreements — and content licensing is the slowest part, because the two libraries were assembled under contracts written for separate companies.
The subscriber question
Ellison has said combining the two would create “a little over 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers.” For scale, Netflix last reported 325 million subscribers in January.
Two hundred million subscribers across two services is not the same as 200 million people paying one bill. The interesting number will be how many households currently pay for both, because those are the accounts where a merger produces a genuine saving rather than a price increase.
What to do right now
- Do not cancel either service on merger speculation. Nothing has changed about what you can watch today.
- Watch your renewal price, not the headlines. Mergers change pricing at the point of renewal, and annual plans can lock in the current rate for a while.
- Expect bundling first. A combined discount for holding both is the most likely near-term step, since it requires no content migration.
