Windows 11’s November 2026 Update: What Changes and How to Get It Early

Microsoft’s next monthly Windows 11 update is not a redesign. It is a bundle of practical fixes, one genuinely new recovery tool, and a right-click menu you can finally rearrange. The feature list was published in the October 28 preview update, KB5127936, which covers Windows 11 version 25H2 and 26H2 (OS builds 26300.9818 and 26200.9818).

Microsoft splits that package into a gradual rollout and a normal rollout. Gradual features reach devices in phases, so two PCs on the same build can show different options for a few weeks. That is normal, not a broken install.

    What actually arrives

A right-click menu you can customise

File Explorer’s context menu has been rebuilt. It opens faster and, more usefully, it is now editable: right-click and choose Customize menu to open the matching Settings page. From there you can turn built-in commands such as Send to and Create shortcut on or off, add commands like Print, decide whether app extensions sit in the main menu or a submenu, show Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete and Share as text instead of icons, and push Properties to the bottom. Holding Shift while right-clicking still exposes the fuller legacy menu.

Cloud rebuild: reinstall Windows without a USB stick

The headline addition is Cloud rebuild, which reinstalls Windows 11 from a Windows image and device drivers downloaded through Windows Update. Microsoft’s steps: go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Rebuild PC. If the machine cannot start, WinRE offers Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall > Cloud rebuild instead.

There are two details worth pausing on. First, you can choose to remove your files or to securely erase the drive using the storage hardware’s own erase capability before reinstall, and Microsoft states plainly that sanitisation is irreversible. Second, cloud rebuild needs a wired or Wi-Fi connection, and it warns about data loss before starting. Administrators can also trigger it remotely through the Recovery CSP.

If you would rather keep an offline fallback, our guide to creating a Windows 11 USB recovery drive covers the older, still-supported route.

Magnifier gets per-monitor zoom and a contrast toggle

Multi-monitor users get two real improvements. Magnifier now supports per-monitor zoom, so each display keeps its own zoom level, and it is on by default. Point at a display and press Windows key + Plus or Windows key + Minus, use Ctrl + Alt with the mouse wheel, or park the Magnifier toolbar on that screen.

There is also viewport locking: point at a display and press Ctrl + Windows key + K to lock the magnified view in place while your pointer moves elsewhere. Windows key + Esc releases every locked display, and the shortcut can be remapped to Ctrl + Alt + P in Settings. A new contrast theme toggle darkens the magnified view while leaving colours in photos and charts intact.

    Clearer privacy controls

The Privacy & security page now groups camera, microphone and location permissions together and lifts usage information from linked pages onto the main screen, so you can see which apps have been using them without drilling through submenus.

    Smaller changes that add up

    • File Explorer: the address bar accepts ~ to jump straight to your user profile (for example ~\AppData), search results share a consistent name, location and date layout, and Folder Options finally supports dark mode.
    • AutoPlay: the dialog gets dark mode, better text scaling, and notifications that land in Notification Center.
    • Taskbar and Phone Link: smoother window preview animations, taskbar settings that survive monitor disconnects on multi-display setups, and hover previews of recent messages and notifications in Start.
    • Live Captions: a new Include screen reader audio setting, off by default, keeps narrator audio out of your captions when you want them focused on system and microphone sound.
    • Narrator: reads and navigates maths equations in Word and PowerPoint, plus Edge 153.0.4234.32 and Chrome 153.0.8010.18 and later. Toggle it with Narrator key + Alt + N; supported languages are US and UK English, Traditional Chinese, Finnish, German and Spanish.
    • Recovery: WinRE can reuse Wi-Fi profiles Windows already knows about, including certificate-based networks, so recovery no longer demands credentials you may not have to hand.
    • XBOX mode: the Gaming Task View gains a navigation bar with direct access to Exit to Desktop and Power Options.

    Edge starts faster

Accelerated App Launch is a normal-rollout change: Microsoft says Edge opens faster and more consistently when the PC is busy, because Windows no longer pays the full cost of launching a browser that is already running in the background. It needs Microsoft Edge version 150 or later and works across Windows 11 25H2, 26H2 and 26H1.

    How to get it early

    1. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
    2. Look for the optional preview update for your version. The October preview was KB5127936; Microsoft releases these late in the month, ahead of the following month’s broad release.
    3. Install it and restart. Expect features to appear in stages even afterwards, because of the gradual rollout.

    What to be cautious about

Windows coverage ahead of Patch Tuesday often outruns the official change list. PCWorld’s November 4 report also describes an Adaptive Hibernate power feature that adjusts hibernation timing to battery level. That feature does not appear in Microsoft’s published KB5127936 list at the time of writing, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed for this cycle.

Two practical cautions. Gradual rollout means an update that installs cleanly can still look like it did nothing, so give it a week or two before troubleshooting. And cloud rebuild’s secure erase option is permanent: copy anything you cannot recreate before choosing it.
