If you went looking for more IT: Welcome to Derry after the first season ended, you were not imagining things. HBO released a surprise episode on Halloween, and the show has already been renewed.
The surprise episode nobody announced
On 31 October 2026 HBO dropped a 30-minute special titled A Story of Derry on HBO Max at midnight, with a linear airing on HBO the same day. It was not teased in advance.
The episode is set hundreds of years before the events of the series and before the introduction of Pennywise, which makes it a genuine prequel rather than a deleted scene or a clip show.
Variety reported the release as a deliberate Halloween surprise, timed to the holiday that suits a supernatural horror series.
Season 2 is happening
HBO renewed the series for a second season in August 2026. That renewal came before the Halloween special, so the prequel episode was not a backdoor way of testing interest.
The realistic timing is late 2027 or 2028 for a premiere. That is the current expectation reported around the renewal, not a date HBO has confirmed, so treat any firm date you see elsewhere with suspicion.
How the first season performed
The numbers explain why a renewal was straightforward. The premiere drew 5.7 million viewers in its first three days, the third most-watched debut on the platform behind House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
More telling is the trajectory: the penultimate episode drew 5.8 million, and the season averaged 10.7 million viewers per episode. A show that grows across a season rather than decaying is exactly what a streamer wants.
