Bitcoin dropped below $81,000 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after a hotter-than-expected US inflation report shifted expectations for Federal Reserve policy. The Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% in September, above the 3.6% economists expected, and core CPI came in at 2.6% year-over-year versus 2.5% forecast.
What the CPI report did
The inflation data pushed odds of a Fed rate hike later in October to roughly 50-50, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool, from near 80% odds of no hike just a day earlier. Higher rates tend to pressure non-yielding assets like bitcoin, and the market responded accordingly.
Bitcoin fell from around $83,000 into the low $81,000s, ethereum dropped below $2,400 and XRP slid to about $1.32. Over $450 million in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, almost $400 million of those being bullish long bets, according to Coinglass data.
The ETF flow picture
US spot bitcoin ETF outflows resumed, totaling $261 million on Wednesday after posting $176 million in inflows the previous day. Ethereum ETFs lost $130 million after seeing $25 million in inflows on Tuesday. Those Ethereum outflows extend a streak that began on September 29.
The divergence between bitcoin and ethereum is notable. Bitcoin has repeatedly failed to break above the $86,000 to $87,000 range, while ethereum has underperformed year-over-year by more than 40%. Analysts quoted in market coverage suggested that elevated Treasury yields and a stronger dollar remain the primary headwinds for both assets.
The technical setup
Bitcoin has been range-bound around $82,000 for roughly 50 days, with choppy intraday action. A widely followed trader noted on social media that the pattern resembles the consolidation seen in July 2026 and suggested a decisive break in one direction is approaching. Support near $77,000 to $83,000 has held; a breakdown below that range could open a move toward $67,000 to $76,000, while a breakout could target $93,000 to $100,000.
