Bitcoin dropped below $82,000 on Wednesday, October 14, after a hotter-than-expected U.S. consumer inflation report revived concerns that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again this month.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell roughly 2% over 24 hours, trading near $81,500 in afternoon U.S. hours after opening the day around $83,100. Ethereum, Solana, and XRP also declined between 2% and 3%.

    ## What the CPI Report Showed

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 8:30 a.m. EDT. The numbers came in above economists’ forecasts across the board:

    – **Headline CPI:** 3.7% year-over-year, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% economists expected.
    – **Core CPI** (excluding food and energy): 2.6% year-over-year, up from 2.4% and above the 2.5% forecast.
    – **Monthly headline CPI:** 0.6%, matching expectations but double August’s 0.4% pace.
    – **Monthly core CPI:** 0.3%, above the 0.2% economists projected.

Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase, according to the BLS. The broader energy index rose 5.2%. But economists noted the pressure extended beyond fuel, with shelter, used vehicles, apparel, and medical costs also climbing.

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, called it “a rough September inflation report,” noting the 0.6% monthly rise was the largest since May.

    ## Rate Hike Odds Spike

The report immediately shifted expectations for the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 policy meeting. According to CME’s FedWatch tool, the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike jumped from roughly 22% before the data to around 44–50% immediately after, before cooling to approximately 26–30% later in the day.

Fed officials had already been hinting at further tightening. Austan Goolsbee, president of the Chicago Fed, called the numbers “discouraging” but added, “We need to get more data” before concluding the central bank should hike again.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to approximately 5.27%, and the U.S. Dollar Index climbed to its highest level since May 2025.

    ## Crypto Market Reaction

The crypto market saw over $450 million in liquidations in the 24 hours following the report, nearly $400 million of which were bullish long bets, according to Coinglass data.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $150.5 million in net outflows on October 14, reversing the previous day’s $175.7 million inflow. Bitcoin remains approximately 34% below its all-time high of $126,156, set roughly a year ago.

CryptoQuant reported that 84% of 164 analysts it tracks are now bullish on Bitcoin, up from 37% in July, suggesting that longer-term sentiment remains positive despite the short-term macro pressure.

    ## What Happens Next

Attention now turns to the Fed’s October meeting and the Producer Price Index (PPI) report, scheduled for Friday, October 15. September retail sales and jobless claims data are also due Thursday.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak at the IMF Annual Meetings this week, which could provide additional clarity on the central bank’s path.

Traders are watching whether Bitcoin can hold support in the $81,000–$82,000 range or whether continued macro pressure pushes prices toward the $80,000 level.
