WhatsApp has introduced a new set of parental controls designed to give parents more visibility into how their teenage children use the messaging platform. The update reflects growing concern among parents and policymakers about the safety of minors on social messaging services.
Contact and Group Oversight
With the new tools, parents can see which individuals their teen is chatting with and monitor the groups they join. If a teen enters a new group or an existing group experiences a sudden surge in members, WhatsApp will send a notification to the parent, helping them stay informed about rapid changes in their child’s social circle on the app.
Granular Control Over Features
Parents can now decide how their teen uses specific features within WhatsApp. The controls allow parents to choose whose Status updates are visible to their teen and to restrict who can view their teen’s own Status. This gives families more granular control over the social aspects of the platform without requiring parents to monitor every direct message.
AI Interaction Limits
One of the most notable additions is the ability to moderate how teens interact with Meta AI on the platform. Parents can set limits on the type of content their child sees when using the AI feature, addressing concerns that minors might be exposed to inappropriate or unreliable responses from AI systems.
Rollout and Availability
The parental controls are being rolled out gradually to WhatsApp users worldwide. Parents who want to use the features will need to link their account with their teen’s account through WhatsApp’s supervision tools, which were first introduced in 2024. The new controls build on that foundation with more detailed oversight options.
The update places WhatsApp in line with other major social platforms that have introduced similar tools for parents in recent years, including Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. As regulators around the world push for stronger protections for minors online, these features are likely to become standard across the industry.
