X Money Launches to Expand Elon Musk’s “Everything App” Vision
What Is X Money?
X Money is the newest addition to Elon Musk’s plan to turn X into an “everything app.” The service provides a digital wallet, peer‑to‑peer payments that resemble Venmo, and a metal Visa card that can display a user’s X handle. It also integrates with Apple Wallet and offers free transfers within the platform.
Features and Benefits
Users can send and receive money instantly, store funds in a secure wallet, and link the card to other payment methods. The metal Visa card adds a premium feel and can be customized with the holder’s X username. For iPhone users, the wallet works directly in Apple Wallet, making transactions convenient on the go.
Eligibility and Pricing
The offering is currently limited to X Premium and Premium Plus subscribers in the United States. While all Premium members can use the basic wallet and card features, the higher‑yield interest rate of up to 6 percent APY is reserved for Premium Plus users who meet a minimum deposit threshold. Standard Premium members must keep a specified balance to receive a “boosted” 6 percent APY.
Background and Context
The rollout follows a period of invite‑only testing that began earlier this year. In 2023, Musk announced that any financial activity would eventually be hosted on X, signaling his long‑term ambition for the platform. A few months later, he confirmed that early public access would begin in April, a timeline that has now been realized.
Regulatory and Safety Considerations
Senator Elizabeth Warren has voiced concerns about the potential risks of integrating payments into a social media platform, warning that it could endanger consumers, affect national security, and threaten financial stability. Her remarks underscore the need for robust oversight as X Money moves forward.
