Jonathan Frakes Debunks Star Trek First Contact Improvisation Rumor 30 Years Later
Thirty years after Star Trek: First Contact hit theaters, Jonathan Frakes — who played Lt. Commander Worf in the film and directed two Star Trek movies himself — has finally set the record straight about one of the franchise’s most quoted moments.
During the iconic spacewalk sequence, Worf (Michael Dorn) joins Captain Picard and Hawk on a suit-clad EVA to destroy a Borg device. As they battle the Borg on the hull, Worf delivers the now-famous line “Assimilate this!” before firing a weapon that alerts the Collective in the Delta Quadrant. For decades, fans have debated whether the line was improvised or scripted. Frakes says there’s no debate at all.

Never Improvised
Frakes addressed the rumor on The Nacelle Company’s Instagram page for The Center Seat II: 60 Years of Star Trek. His response was unequivocal: “Never. Never happened.” He emphasized that improvisation was never permitted on Star Trek: The Next Generation or its feature films.
According to Frakes, the credit for the memorable line belongs to screenwriters Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, who crafted the dialogue during the script development stage. During the TNG era, actors were required to be word-perfect, and any deviation — even a minor tweak — required prior approval from producers.
The Culture of Star Trek Sets
Frakes’ recollection offers a window into the disciplined production culture of Star Trek during the 1990s. The franchise operated under tight scripts and structured schedules, leaving little room for the kind of on-set improvisation common in contemporary comedy or independent film. While some actors have pushed for flexibility over the years, the Next Generation films maintained a strict adherence to the written page.
This approach contrasts with other science fiction franchises where actors have more leeway to shape their dialogue. The contrast highlights how Star Trek’s commitment to scripted precision contributed to its distinctive voice — even when fans imagined a more spontaneous origin for their favorite lines.
A Line That Endured
Regardless of its origin, “Assimilate this!” has endured as one of the most quoted moments in the entire Star Trek canon. It has been referenced in memes, merchandise, and countless fan discussions over the past three decades. Frakes’ confirmation adds a final piece of clarity to a debate that has circulated since the film’s 1996 release.
For a franchise built on attention to detail and continuity, it’s fitting that one of its most beloved moments was no accident of inspiration — it was carefully crafted by the writers who shaped the film’s story from the page up.
