Joel Kinnaman’s Detective Hole Gets Perfect Follow-Up Series After Netflix Run

Netflix’s Detective Hole, starring Joel Kinnaman, earned strong critical praise and solid viewership during its run, appearing in Netflix’s top 10 for several weeks. Despite that performance, the streaming service has not announced a renewal for a second season — and now Kinnaman is moving on to a new crime thriller that could serve as the perfect follow-up.

    What Detective Hole Left Behind

Based on novels by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, Detective Hole followed the investigation of a serial killer in Oslo. Kinnaman played Tom Waaler, a complex antagonist whose arc reached its conclusion in the season finale. The series had enough source material for additional seasons, given Nesbø’s extensive catalog of Hole novels, but Netflix ultimately chose not to continue the story.

The ending of Detective Hole left room for exploration of Waaler’s backstory, suggesting flashbacks could revisit the character in future installments. However, given Waaler’s apparent demise in the finale, a return seems unlikely.

    Kinnaman’s Next Crime Thriller

Kinnaman is now slated to lead a new crime thriller on Prime Video, a project that promises fresh challenges and strong storytelling. The role will place him in a leading position rather than the antagonistic one he played in Detective Hole, offering a different kind of character for the actor to explore.

The move continues Kinnaman’s streak of crime and thriller roles, which includes his breakout performance in The Killing and later work in Altered Carbon and For All Mankind. His ability to portray morally complex characters has made him a natural fit for the genre, and his new Prime Video project appears to lean into that strength.

    The Streaming Shuffle

Kinnaman’s transition from Netflix to Prime Video illustrates the fluid nature of streaming-original relationships. Actors who headline successful series on one platform are increasingly finding follow-up opportunities elsewhere, as services compete for proven talent and built-in audiences. For viewers, this means a beloved actor’s next project may not arrive on the same service where they became familiar with them.

While Detective Hole may not continue, Kinnaman’s presence in the crime thriller space shows no signs of diminishing. His upcoming Prime Video series will be worth tracking for fans of the genre and for anyone who appreciated his work in the Netflix show.
