Steven Soderbergh, the director of Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic and more recently Black Bag, has stepped in to complete principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves attends to an ongoing family matter.
What Warner Bros. confirmed
Warner Bros. issued a statement saying that Soderbergh, “as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2.” The studio said Reeves and Soderbergh will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Reeves’ vision for the film.
Reeves himself addressed the news on social media, writing: “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography.”
What this means for the production
Soderbergh is completing the final weeks of principal photography, not reshooting the film or taking over post-production. The footage he shoots is intended to integrate seamlessly with what Reeves has already filmed. Composer Michael Giacchino returns, and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt steps in for Greig Fraser, who is currently shooting the four Beatles films for Sony.
The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan in the cast.
The release date, and why it moved before
The Batman Part II currently has a February 18, 2028 release date. The film was originally expected on October 2, 2026, then pushed to October 1, 2027, before moving again to February 2028.
DC Studios CEO James Gunn explained the earlier delay in a social media post: “The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already).” The February 2028 date was shared alongside new camera test footage from the film.
Why Soderbergh is a notable choice
Soderbergh is one of the most respected working directors in Hollywood, with a career that spans studio films, independent productions and television. He is also known as a skilled editor and cinematographer — he often shoots and edits his own work under pseudonyms — which makes him particularly well-suited to completing another director’s footage without disrupting the visual language of the film.
His most recent film, Black Bag, was a spy thriller released earlier this year to strong reviews.
What to watch for
The February 2028 date remains the operative target. The question is whether the handover creates any risk to that date — and the answer, based on the scale of the handover (weeks of photography, not months), is that it should not. The bigger variable has always been the script and post-production, not the shoot itself.
