If you are shopping for noise-cancelling headphones in October 2026, the number to beat is $198. That is the lowest price recorded for the Sony WH-1000XM5 on Amazon, and it is a genuine cut rather than a badge: the same model was selling for $298 for most of September.
Headphones are the category where deal claims are hardest to check and easiest to get wrong, because the list price has barely moved in years while the sale price swings by $100. Here is what the recorded price data actually shows, and how to read it yourself.
What the price history shows for the WH-1000XM5
Independent trackers record what a listing costs on each scan. For the Sony WH-1000XM5 in black (Amazon ASIN B09XS7JWHH), the record shows an all-time low of $198.00, most recently recorded on October 5, 2026, against a 2026 average of roughly $293. For the silver version (ASIN B09XSDMT4F), the all-time low is also $198.00, recorded on October 5, 2026, against an average of about $296.
One tracker summarised the September-to-October window for this model as follows: it cost $298.00 on the typical day from September 9 to October 4, 2026, then dropped to $198.00 for the period October 5 to October 12, 2026. During Prime Big Deal Days on October 6 and 7, the lowest price was $198.00, which was 33% under the price it had been selling at in the two weeks before the event.
The same tracker’s most recent check of Best Buy, on October 13, 2026, found the model at $228.00 – 23% below its median since September 6 of $298.00, but $30 above the low. That gap is the whole point: two retailers, two different sale prices, one genuine historical low.
Why the discount percentage tells you nothing
Sony has listed the WH-1000XM5 at $398.00 at various points since its 2022 launch, and one tracker records a highest-ever price of $398.00. A retailer can advertise 50% off against that figure while charging $198 – which happens to be a real low – or advertise 25% off against a $298 list while charging $223, which is not.
The percentage is arithmetic performed on a number the seller chooses. The historical low and the 30-day median are facts about what people actually paid.

The four numbers to check on any headphone deal
- Current price, with the seller named. Amazon’s own price for a model sold and shipped by Amazon is not the same as a third-party marketplace price on the same page. On this model, third-party new prices were recorded at $238.00 on October 10, 2026, while Amazon’s own low was $198.00.
- The recorded low. If the current price is at or within a few dollars of the all-time low, it is a real deal. For the WH-1000XM5 that bar is $198.00.
- The 30-day or 90-day median. This is the usual price. A tracker put the typical price for this model at $248.00 based on the middle of what customers paid at Amazon over 90 days, promotions excluded – so anything at or below $248 is genuinely below normal.
- Whether the deal has already expired. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days ran from October 6 to October 7, 2026 and ended at 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 7. Coverage written during that window is still online, and the prices in it are gone.
Buying used or open-box changes the maths
Used and open-box prices move independently, and they can undercut the low you are watching for. On this model, third-party used prices were recorded at $176.99 on September 6, 2026 and $183.99 on September 8, 2026 – below the $198 new low. That is not automatically a better deal: check the condition grade, the returns window and whether the warranty transfers before comparing it to a new unit.
A note on the newer model
Sony’s follow-up, the WH-1000XM6, has been positioned by reviewers as the current flagship, and it has been compared directly against the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). If you are choosing between them, the honest answer is that both are flagship-priced, and the older XM5 only becomes the value pick when it is genuinely near $198. At $298, the gap to the newer model narrows enough that the decision should come down to fit and features rather than price.
What to do this week
Look up the exact model and colour before you buy – the WH-1000XM5 is tracked separately in black and silver, and their prices do not always match. Check the current price, the seller, the all-time low and the median. If the price is at or near the low, buy it. If it is $50 or more above the low with no deadline attached, wait.
Prices, stock and seller details change constantly, and the figures above are the prices recorded at the dates stated. Always confirm the current price, the seller and the currency on the product page before you check out. Honest Fred has not independently tested these headphones and is not affiliated with any retailer mentioned.
