The Diplomat returns for its fourth season on Thursday, October 15, with all eight episodes dropping at once on Netflix. The political thriller stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, and the new season picks up with the Wylers in direct conflict with the White House.
The cast
- Keri Russell as Kate Wyler
- Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, the vice president
- Allison Janney as Grace Penn, now president of the United States
- Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, first gentleman
- David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, U.K. foreign secretary
- Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, CIA London station chief
- Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, deputy chief of mission in London
- Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah, White House chief of staff
- Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge, U.K. prime minister
Janney, Whitford and Mensah have been promoted to series regulars for season four, reflecting the expanded roles their characters play in the new administration.
What season 4 is about
Season four picks up after the events of season three, in which Kate accused Vice President Grace Penn of involvement in a terrorist plot and set her sights on the vice presidency. With the president now dead and Penn in office, the Wylers find themselves on the wrong side of the administration they served.
Showrunner Debora Cahn has described season four as exploring what happens when the people in power make decisions that Kate and Hal cannot morally support. In the season four finale, several characters — including Kate and Hal — publicly resign from the administration.
The central tension is both political and marital. Cahn has framed the season around “two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster” — Kate and Hal, and Grace and Todd.
The Poseidon storyline
A key plot thread from season three carries over: Hal and Grace worked together to steal the Poseidon, a Russian nuclear-armed underwater drone. Kate discovers this betrayal in season three, and the fallout drives much of the conflict in season four.
Cahn has said that season four deals with the consequences of that reveal, and that the season asks what Kate is willing to sacrifice to stop what she sees as a dangerous administration.
