AI cloud startup Runpod hits $120M in ARR — and it started with a Reddit post

Runpod: The AI App Hosting Platform That Achieved $120 Million Annual Revenue Run Rate

Runpod, an AI app hosting platform that launched four years ago, has hit a remarkable milestone of $120 million annual revenue run rate, as revealed by its founders Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch. This achievement is a testament to the platform’s exceptional growth and the founders’ dedication to providing a seamless experience for developers.

The journey of Runpod began in late 2021 when Lu and Singh, two friends and corporate developers at Comcast, decided to pivot from their hobby of mining Ethereum. They had invested a significant amount of money in specialized computers, but the venture was not yielding the desired returns. Moreover, the upcoming “Merge” network upgrade was expected to render their mining rigs obsolete. This prompted them to explore alternative uses for their GPUs, and they eventually converted their mining rigs into AI servers.

At that time, the software stack for dealing with GPUs was “god-awful,” according to Lu. As developers, they saw an opportunity to create a platform that would simplify the process of hosting AI apps. Runpod was born, with a focus on speed, easily configured hardware, and dev tools like APIs, command-line interfaces, and other integrations. The platform’s early success can be attributed to the founders’ decision to post on Reddit, offering free access to their AI servers in exchange for feedback. This move helped them land beta customers, which eventually led to paying customers.

    Bootstrapping Growth and Securing Funding

Within nine months, Lu and Singh had quit their jobs and reached $1 million in revenue. However, they soon faced a new challenge: scaling their infrastructure to meet the demands of business users. Instead of raising capital from VCs, they formed revenue-share partnerships with data centers to grow their capacity. This approach proved to be stressful, as they had to stay ahead of the curve to ensure they had sufficient GPUs to meet market demand.

Meanwhile, their user base was growing rapidly on Reddit and Discord, especially after the launch of ChatGPT. VCs began to take notice, and Radhika Malik, a partner at Dell Technologies Capital, reached out to Lu after seeing their posts on Reddit. Although Lu was initially unsure about pitching to an investor, Malik provided valuable guidance on how VCs think. This conversation laid the groundwork for their future funding rounds.

In May 2024, Runpod secured a $20 million seed deal co-led by the VC arms of Dell and Intel, with participation from notable investors like Nat Friedman and Julien Chaumond, co-founder of Hugging Face. Chaumond had discovered Runpod while using their product and reached out to the founders via the support chat. This investment marked a significant milestone for the company, and they have since grown to 500,000 developers, with customers ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 enterprise teams.

    Competing in a Crowded Market

Runpod operates in a highly competitive market, with major clouds like AWS, Microsoft, and Google, as well as industry-specific choices like CoreWeave and Core Scientific. However, the founders believe their dev-centric approach sets them apart. They envision a future where programmers will become AI agent creators and operators, and their goal is to be the platform that this next generation of software developers grows up on.

Today, Runpod’s cloud spans 31 regions globally, and their customers include prominent companies like Replit, Cursor, OpenAI, Perplexity, Wix, and Zillow. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, Runpod is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for AI app hosting and development. With their strong foundation, commitment to innovation, and focus on developer experience, Runpod is poised to maintain its impressive growth trajectory.
