BBC will soon fully block uncertified Android/Google TV devices from using its iPlayer app

BBC iPlayer’s Upcoming Shutdown on Android TV

Many Android TV and Google TV owners have started seeing a notice that the iPlayer app will stop working after September 30 2026. The alert tells users their device will be blocked unless they act.

    The Message Users Are Seeing

The warning does not come from an outdated operating system or a stale version of the app. Instead, the newest iPlayer build checks whether the device appears on the BBC’s official list of certified models.

Why It’s Not About an Outdated System

Devices such as Nvidia Shield, Onn, TCL, Thompson, and Xiaomi boxes are currently missing from that list, even though the app runs fine on them. The check was added in the latest update, creating the new warning.

    How the Check Works

When the app launches, it reads the device’s model information. If the model isn’t recognized as certified, a pop‑up appears with a “Continue to iPlayer” button. Clicking it lets the user keep using the app, at least temporarily.

    What Happens Next

According to the BBC help page, the “Continue” button may be removed in October, meaning the app could become unusable on those devices after the September deadline. The corporation advises buying a new certified device, even though the current hardware may still be fully capable.

    Workarounds and Their Limits

Some users have tried installing newer, officially signed versions of iPlayer or using modified APKs that spoof a certified device. Those methods have not taken off because earlier, unofficial builds already worked without issue. However, the BBC may tighten enforcement, making such workarounds riskier.

Should You Buy a New Device?

If your Android TV or Google TV box is showing the support notice, you might want to hold off on purchasing a replacement. The device could receive a final update that extends its usability, and a new purchase isn’t guaranteed to solve the problem if the certification list stays the same.
