Whalefall Opens at No. 4 and Falls Well Short of Its $60 Million Budget

Whalefall, 20th Century Studios’ survival thriller, opened to about $7.8 million from 3,065 theaters over the October 16-18, 2026 weekend, landing at No. 4. Tracking estimates had put the opening at $10 million to $12 million, so the result came in below expectations.

The film carries a reported $60 million production budget, which makes the opening a significant disappointment for Disney’s specialty label. Theatrical break-even is commonly estimated at roughly 2.5 times production budget, so a $7.8 million start leaves a long way to go even before marketing costs.

    What the numbers actually are

These are weekend estimates, not final grosses, and they were reported by multiple trackers with small differences. Box Office Mojo’s daily chart put the Sunday figure at $1,945,783 for a three-day total of $7,837,153, while Box Office Watch and The Numbers both recorded the opening weekend at $7.84 million. The film earned $900,000 from Thursday previews before dropping to $3 million on Friday.

Internationally, Whalefall added about $9.5 million for a roughly $17.5 million worldwide opening, performing best in China with $700,000 and showing moderate results across Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

    Why it opened soft

The reported cause was demographic overlap. Paramount’s Street Fighter dominated the same weekend with a heavily male audience, 45 percent of whose ticket buyers were over 35, and that crowd largely chose the video game adaptation over the whale survival thriller. Whalefall does hold a 70 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which shows the reviews were not the problem.

That is the useful lesson in this result: a decent critical score does not protect an opening when a competing release owns the same audience. Our report on the October 16-18 box office covers the weekend from the winner’s side.

    What we did not do

We did not watch or review the film, and we did not verify the $60 million budget against a studio filing. Box office figures for a weekend in progress are estimates and may be revised when final actuals are reported.
