If your laptop’s built-in camera is not good enough for calls, a dedicated webcam is one of the cheapest upgrades that makes an immediate difference. These picks come from published testing by WIRED, PCMag, TechRadar and Tom’s Guide.
We are summarising other reviewers’ testing, not repeating our own. Prices and availability below should be re-checked before buying.
Best overall: Obsbot Tiny 3
PCMag names the Obsbot Tiny 3 as its best overall webcam at $349. It highlights mechanical pan and tilt support, multiple auto-framing options, a bright and sharp 1080p picture, and powerful control software.
Best for image quality: Insta360 Link 2C Pro
WIRED tested more than 15 webcams and names the Insta360 Link 2C Pro at $200 as its pick for the best image quality, microphone and design. The reviewer specifically notes its low-light performance is on par with nothing else at the price, and that its compact, light design works on a laptop or a monitor. WIRED notes the Logitech MX Brio, its previous best-overall pick, is almost three times heavier.
Best budget: HP 325 FHD Webcam
TechRadar names the HP 325 FHD Webcam as its best budget webcam, which is the pick to look at if you want a meaningful improvement over a built-in laptop camera without spending at the $200-350 level.
What to check before you buy
- Resolution versus frame rate. 1080p at 60fps often looks smoother on calls than 4K at 30fps, because motion matters more than pixel count for a talking head.
- Field of view. A wider lens fits more people or more of your desk, but it also shows more of the room behind you.
- Low-light performance. This is where budget webcams fall down fastest, and it is the difference between looking presentable and looking like a silhouette.
- Mounting. A webcam that clamps securely to your specific monitor is worth more than one that only sits on a desk.
For the wider setup, our budget earbuds roundup and our headphones roundup cover the audio half of a call setup.
What we did not do
We did not test any of these webcams ourselves, and we did not verify current prices. All picks and assessments come from the published roundups cited below, and prices will have changed since those guides were updated.
