How to Set Up Netflix Parental Controls, Kids Profiles and Profile Locks

Netflix restricts what kids can watch in three separate ways, and they are not the same thing. You can create a dedicated Kids profile, set a maturity rating or block specific titles on any profile, and require a four-digit Profile Lock PIN to open a profile. Each solves a different problem.

This guide follows Netflix’s own help documentation. One important quirk: maturity ratings and title blocks for a Kids profile must be changed in a web browser, not in the app.

    1. Create a Kids profile

    1. Open the Manage Profiles page. On a TV or streaming device: the profile selection screen, then Add Profile+. On phone or tablet: the Netflix app, My Netflix, your profile, Manage Profiles. On the web: the Manage Profiles page at netflix.com.
    2. Choose Add Profile, name it, and select For Kids, Kids Profile or Kid? depending on your device, then continue.

The main (first) profile cannot be set up as a Kids profile. A Kids profile uses a simplified interface, removes access to account settings, and cannot be given an email address, so a child cannot sign in to it directly.

    2. Set a maturity rating or block titles

For a Kids profile, do this in a web browser: go to your Account page, then Profiles, choose Adjust parental controls, select the profile, verify your identity with a code sent to email or phone (or your Netflix account password), set the Maturity Rating level, then save.

On a phone or tablet the path is app, My Netflix, profile name, Manage Profiles, choose the profile, Viewing Restrictions, Maturity Rating, then verify with your account password.

To block specific titles in the app: My Netflix, profile name, Manage Profiles, choose the profile, Viewing Restrictions, Block Titles, verify with your account password, then type a show or movie name and tap it to add it to the blocked list. Tap the X to remove it. Blocking titles for a Kids profile must also be done in a web browser.

    3. Add a Profile Lock PIN

On the web: Account page, Profiles, choose a profile, Profile Lock, Create a Profile Lock, enter four numbers, then save the PIN.

In the app: My Netflix, profile name, Manage Profiles, choose the profile, Profile Lock, Create a Profile Lock, verify with your account password, then enter four numbers.

The PIN is then required to open the profile or play titles downloaded from it. If you want, you can also require a PIN to add new profiles: on the web, when adding a Profile Lock for the main (first) profile, check Require PIN to add new profiles.

    If something is not working

If a change does not appear, switch to another profile and back, or sign out and sign back in. If you forget the Profile Lock PIN, select Forgot PIN? or go to netflix.com/account and edit or remove it; identity verification is required.

    What we did not do

We did not test these steps on a live Netflix account, and menu wording can vary by device and app version. Netflix’s own help pages are the authoritative source for your specific device.
