Bitcoin Falls Back to $82K as Tech Selloff and Oil Weigh on Risk

Bitcoin steadied at $82,785.8 by 02:13 ET on October 22, 2026, after rising to nearly $85,000 in overnight trade, according to Investing.com. The move reversed a brief rebound as risk appetite weakened.

The largest cryptocurrency remained within a tight trading range established over the previous month, as a third-quarter rally largely ran out of steam in October.

    Why the rebound stalled

Bitcoin rebounded close to $85,000 overnight, supported briefly by continued flows into spot exchange-traded funds. It then gave back those gains as a broad sell-down in global technology stocks spread through the Asian and European sessions.

The tech selloff was driven by rising concerns over higher interest rates and the long-term sustainability of AI investment, after middling earnings from some of Wall Street’s tech majors. Crypto tends to move alongside tech shares and is also exposed to rising borrowing costs.

A sustained rise in oil prices, which hit a five-month high that week on continued tensions in the Middle East, also weighed on markets. Higher oil feeds into concerns about sticky inflation and rising interest rates.

Altcoins and the rest of the market

Ether fell 0.3% to $2,432.48 and BNB fell 0.7%. XRP was a mild outperformer, rising 0.6%, while Solana and Cardano fell 1.3% and 2.5% respectively. Dogecoin and $TRUMP fell 2.3% and 0.8%.

    Risk note

These are intraday quotes from a single report and will move. Cryptocurrency prices are volatile, past moves do not predict future ones, and nothing here is investment advice. Our wider October 2026 Bitcoin coverage covers the earlier part of the month for context.

    What we did not do

We did not verify the price against an exchange or a second independent source beyond the report cited. Prices quoted are from one published snapshot early on October 22, 2026 and will have changed since.
