EA Shuts Down BioWare and Cancels the Next Mass Effect

Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare, the Canadian studio behind Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, after more than three decades. A fifth Mass Effect game that was in early development has been cancelled.

BioWare announced the closure on October 21, 2026. The Associated Press, citing a Bloomberg report, said the shutdown sits inside a wider round of layoffs at EA affecting roughly 400 people, about 50 of them at BioWare. EA did not respond to a request for comment.

    What was actually cancelled

The next Mass Effect was still in early development, not production. Insider Gaming reported the project had not progressed far enough to be a finished game, which is worth keeping in mind when you see headlines treating it as a completed title being pulled.

Two of BioWare’s most recent releases, 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, drew mixed reviews and disappointed many players, according to AP. The studio’s 2019 attempt at a live-service shooter, Anthem, also failed to find the audience that keeps games like Fortnite and Overwatch going.

What happens to the franchises now is not stated by either company. EA has not said whether Dragon Age, Mass Effect or other BioWare properties will be developed elsewhere, put on hold or licensed out. We have not assumed an answer.

Why EA says it is making this move

EA published a staff memo on October 21 titled “Building EA’s Next Chapter” that lays out three priorities: deepen its core franchises, expand into new markets and business models, and use its sports relationships to build new fan experiences. The memo says the company has “had to make our hardest choices” to concentrate teams and resources.

EA closed a $55 billion sale to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners in August 2026, according to AP. The acquisition is the backdrop to this restructuring, though EA has not drawn a direct line between the two events in its public statements.

What it means if you were planning to buy the games

Nothing about this changes existing games. Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the other BioWare titles that are already released remain available for purchase on their current platforms. If you were waiting for a new Mass Effect, there is no release date to watch for, and no announced successor project.

Digital purchases of discontinued games are a real question whenever a studio closes, and EA has not published a statement about long-term availability for BioWare’s catalogue. If you want a physical copy of an older BioWare title, this is the kind of news that historically makes those copies more scarce.

For context on the wider console landscape, our Xbox Game Pass November 2026 lineup covers the subscription libraries competing for the same player time.

    What we did not do

We did not speak to EA or BioWare staff, and we did not independently confirm the exact layoff count beyond the Bloomberg reporting cited by AP. EA’s internal priorities come from its own published memo.
